Why are you dating?

Many single Christians are uncomfortable with the idea of going on “dates” with other single Christians. There are many reasons for this such as fear, past hurt or disapproval by married friends or church pastors. Deep down every single Christian knows that unless they do something active about their state of singleness little will change.

Single Christians handle their singleness in different ways. Some will push this to the back of their minds for many years citing “faith” as the reason they do nothing while (for a woman) childbearing ages fast runs out making them wonder where God was in His plan for them. Others rush around looking both in and outside the church, perhaps ending up with someone unsuitable or even a non-Christian.

How a single Christian considers their singleness will affect how they approach dating, whether they will eventually find a partner. Motives, fears, peer pressure and Christian teaching are all factors in how successful (or not) someone will be.

What is Christian dating?

Christian dating is simply single Christians getting to know each other socially with a view to a possible relationship or marriage. The emphasis here is on “getting to know each other”. When dating, Christians must learn to use the opportunities they have when meeting new people to learn significant things about each other. To form a lasting relationship there must be shared foundations of compatibility and knowledge of each other. In each relationship this is different as we are all unique individuals. Each person a single Christian meets while dating has a unique personality, desires, history and philosophy. On each date each person must not simply be seeing if there is a “spark” of attraction there but also if these two unique personalities can be combined to walk together in life.

Probably the hardest part of dating is asking the person out in the first place, after this the first date can be a bit nerve wracking initially but after a few dates with different people the whole experience is usually very enjoyable. It will only be when someone starts to relax on dates that they can really begin to get to know the other person and forget (to some extent) how they themselves are performing. It is only when we really relax that our true personality can come through. The only way to do this is get over the nerves associated with dating and this will get easier the more you go on.

Why is Christian dating important?

Dating other single Christians is an important way to begin rightly understanding and relating to each other. By going on fixed, special dating occasions we are forced to pay attention to someone else and consider their lives in a different way to when we related to others in our church settings. Unless we make an effort to do this we may develop un-realistic thinking regarding relationships and this is not a good start for marriage.

So why do you want to go dating?

If the answer is that you want to break out of your comfort zone, allow yourself to get to know other people and be challenged by them then you are thinking about Christian dating along the right lines.
