Christians and using social networking sites.

“Social networking” has become a bit of a buzzword on the Internet in recent months but what is it and how is it related to online Christian dating?

Sites such as MySpace.com have become known as prime examples of effective social networking sites. These sites combine friendship-finding, blogs, dating and interest-sharing all in one place. People can make contact with like-minded people of all kinds in a relatively safe and easy-to-use environment. If someone wants to meet others who are interested in a particular band or activity they can find a group of friends on these sites who they can link up with.

Social networking sites offer a broader range of members than purely online dating sites and they are usually not designed to provide this kind of service. That is not to say that people don’t find partners using them but they are more likely to meet them through general friendship groups rather than by a specifically designed dating profile or searches.

So what can Christians expect to find if they use a social networking site?

First of all there will be a mix of Christians and non-Christians on these sites, probably dominated by people in their late teens and twenties. Usually within a short space of time you will be approached by someone wanting to be your “friend”. After checking out their profile you will then decide if you want to communicate with them. As on many such sites there will be a share of scammers only wanting to relieve you of your hard-earned money but if you are careful you will be safe.

So should Christians use these kind of sites?

As with all non-Christian designed websites you are running the risk of unwanted attention from non-Christians if you join. If your intention is to meet other Christians then a Christian social networking site of a dating site run by Christians with the option to look for friends should be more suitable.

The truth is that the majority of searches performed by Christians are ones related to “Christian dating” and “Christian singles”. This would suggest that many Christian are looking specifically for partners and relationships rather than for friendships alone. A Christian may have to work harder looking for friends than they do looking for dates. ChristiansUK aims to serve both single Christians and those looking to network socially with other Christians who are not single for regular friendships. In the future we will be expanding this feature even further – watch this space!
