Does God want me single?
This is a question that many single Christians ask on a regular basis. The longer you have been a single Christian the more you will have wrestled with this question. What does the Bible say?The Bible is not specific about whether God would want some people to be single. In the Old Testament the Levites were not married but served at the temple. Their inheritance was the things of God instead of a family. In this case the equivalent would be for someone called to a particular kind of self-sacrificing ministry where it would be very difficult to be married. In the Old Testament the Levites were a small minority of Israel and we can conclude that this kind of ministry will not be common in the church today. St. Paul also spoke about his own gift of celibacy and that, for him, it was a blessing (1 Cor 7:7). So has God called you to singleness?Single Christians today sometimes come to the conclusion that, since they have been single for so long, God has given them the call to singleness. This may be a nice thought but if they were to look at the realities that unless they also have the gift of celibacy the call to singleness will be a painful one without it. We shouldn’t imagine that Paul struggled with his single state as he would have had the gift necessary for his needs to be met. We would say that if you are struggling with singleness then you do not have the gift of celibacy and therefore God has not yet called you to singleness. So does God want me to be married? If you at this time do not have the gift of celibacy and are not called to singleness then logically God’s desire is for you to be married. Like everything in this life God’s plan for you is always achieved by faith and action. Other articles on this site can give you advice about how to meet your future marriage partner. Trust in the LordYou now need to settle it in your heart that God’s desire is for you to be married combined with your faith and actions will enable you to meet that person in due time.
